I ran out of my right after Obama finished speaking. When I got down to the Metro platform, there were already about 50 American University kids there waiting for the train. When the train arrived, the students all began to cheer in a way that nobody has ever cheered for a Metro train.
Down at the station near the White House, there was a guy in the Caps jersey, apparently not understanding why everybody was so happy (the Caps did just lose).
Lafayette Square was packed with college students, and media outlets from across the country. A co-worker of mine apparently did a live interview with a radio station in New Zealand about what it was like down there, but it’s hard to capture in blurry photos or shouting into a cell phone.
Yes, there were kids who were there just for the experience of it, as in, there to talk about how crazy it was outside of the White House, not just because they were happy bin Laden was dead.
Still, they shouted U-S-A! and sang patriotic songs, and oddly “We Are The Champions” and “Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead.” And while I bet the kid in this video was all about the experience, seeing him waving the flag while the crowd chanted and sang felt really good.
