Since at least the late ’80s of Madonna and N.W.A., [MTV] has been telling the youth of America to express themselves, a call now taken up by Lady Gaga and other dance-pop populists. The idea is to celebrate yourself and sing yourself, and that’s lovely, but the implication is that singing is an end in itself and that every song is worth a listen regardless of its clarity or content.
