My new roommate moves in tomorrow. She is from Denmark, and admitted to Facebook stalking all of her future roommates Thursday night, while not actually adding us as friends. Today, instead of packing, she apparently decided to make our friendship internet official, and I found out Facebook requests in Danish are crazy… Elisabeth tilføjede dig som ven på Facebook. Du skal bekræfte, at du...

Obama: D.C. is full of wimps
The D.C. area received it’s first real dose of winter weather, and we perfectly showed our new president that we are in no way capable of dealing with even the slightest winter challenge. “Can I make a comment that is unrelated to the economy very quickly?” the new president told reporters at a gathering with business leaders. “And it has to do with Washington. My...

No joke: Ledger earns posthumous Oscar nomination →
What were they thinking when they wrote that headline? Probably, “Fuck it. I’m just going to make a joker pun.”

For the incoming out-of-towners
DF: You think it's gonna be a good party weekend? I'll be in NJ until Sunday or possibly Monday, but then the District.
Me: I don't know. Most DC people are just scared of what this weekend will bring.
DF: So funny cause this kind of thing happens in NY all the time. Then again, 8 million people versus 500k.
DF: It would be like if 32 million people came to New York
DF: I calculated that using my phone's 'Fun Tools.'
Me: NYC is not the clusterfuck of inefficiency that DC is.
Me: You normally have people drinking til 4am. This is new for us. And your public transit system can get tourists around the city without self-destructing. Metro can barely go a rush hour without a fuck up. This is a city where Marion Barry still holds elected office.
DF: Haha yeah. DC will be destroyed... once and for all.

Always thinking ahead
Co-Worker: Brian, do you have a plastic flask so you can get through the metal detector with your booze?
Me: No.
Co-Worker: You have to think about these things.

Joblessness Perspective
By comparison, the 2.6 million jobs lost in 2008 nationwide were equal to the number of jobs found in states such as Wisconsin, Missouri or Maryland. Total 2008 job loss: 2.6 million [CNN] Additionally, the number of jobs reported lost in December is like if everybody in D.C. lost their job, not just those with jobs, but according to the 2006 census, just about everybody. Of course anybody...

Bob Jennings had just left his store on a softly shaded September Saturday when he got a call on his Verizon go-anywhere plan about an impromptu melting competition down at the old mill. Since I was angling to intertwine two seemingly unrelated stories, I took the chance to watch Jennings that day and talk with Frank Appelston, another accomplished melter and Jennings’s closest friend on the NALMM...

NEW! rantings on the pain of Press Releases
This is a stupid, personal gripe, but I already spend part of everyday that I’m at work reading press releases. This morning we received one about an interview with an actress that has a “GREAT LOCAL ANGLE!!!” That great local angle? A bold sentence that tells you that an nationwide event is also happening in your area, without any specifics, and of course the actress...

At least they're watching the news at all
Wasn’t it great how during the election everybody was up to date on the latest political events. We were all tracking the polls, Rachel Maddow was becoming a star, and just everything was great with a newly educated and informed voter. Now, that’s all over. Those thinking that the most exciting race for the White House in modern history would lead to a higher level of discourse on...
